Protecting School Photography Online

Protecting the privacy of pupils online requires more than simply choosing which photographs to publish. A combination of technical safeguards, thoughtful image preparation and website security measures can help schools reduce the risk of their photography being copied, collected or used without permission.

While no single solution can guarantee complete protection, there are several practical steps schools can take to make their images less accessible to automated systems and discourage unauthorised use.

1. Optimising Images for Online Use

Publishing photographs at a reduced resolution can limit their usefulness when downloaded or repurposed. By controlling the pixel dimensions of images uploaded to a website, schools can maintain an attractive visual experience without making unnecessarily large, high-quality originals publicly available. 72 DPI can make images less appealing to bots and AI compared to higher resolution images.

Although smaller files can still be collected and used by AI systems, reducing their size removes some of the additional detail that makes high-resolution photographs valuable.

2. Restricting Automated Image Collection

AI companies and automated services frequently use web crawlers to gather publicly available information, including photographs.

Website security platforms such as Cloudflare offer tools to identify and restrict unwanted automated traffic, including certain AI crawlers.

Such measures provide an additional layer of security, although sophisticated automated systems may still find alternative ways to access publicly available content.

3. Making Images More Difficult to Copy

Additional website functionality can discourage visitors from downloading or capturing photographs.

Although these measures cannot eliminate deliberate image theft, they introduce obstacles to casual copying and demonstrate a visible commitment to protecting the school community.

This functionality is being introduced across client websites throughout the year, with earlier implementation available on request.

A More Considered Approach to Image Safety

The most effective strategy combines website security with careful decisions about how photographs are captured, prepared and published.

Technical protections can help reduce unwanted access, but they are not substitutes for responsible image selection, appropriate permissions and photography that considers pupil privacy from the outset.

Together, these measures can help schools maintain the warmth, personality and visual storytelling that make photography so valuable, while taking meaningful steps to protect the people featured within it.
